If you have 2 tables with nothing between them, the thing that makes them separate is a return (?) between the two tables. Delete the return and the 2 tables will become 1.

If you are not seeing the ? or the spaces between words either click on the Show/Hide (?) icon on the Home tab, Paragraph group or press Ctrl-Shift-*
