Want to work in software development long term, IT until then. Don't know where to start?

I have a college degree in health management and am about 30 years old. I've been building computers as a teenager and have had any easy time fixing them and learning new things about them. I've taken some courses in high school and college involving programming and learned very quickly and did well.

I don't know why I didn't take computer science in college, it was a stupid decision not to. Now I work a medicore job which just isn't engaging, and simply doesn't pay enough.

I want a career change but don't know where to start. I want to be a developer but that will take some time, and I don't know if I have to go back to school or if I can teach myself and if thatd be enough to get a start. Would getting A+ cert help to at least get into IT now or would that be a waste of time? Is there another cert I should pursue? Do I need to go back to college for the computer science route? Any advice would be great. Thank you.
