yes that's a good idea as XP is much better than ME you should upgrade the ram memory at the same time as XP can use 3.3Gb ME crashes with more than 768Mb

System requirements are similar enough, although, if you have an absolutely ancient computer, it's better to get yourself a new one. XP doesn't get updates anymore so it's really not worth your time going below Windows 7.
