For any decent Linux distribution there is an option during the install to resize the original partition to make room, then to create new2 partitions for the Linux install. Before you start READ the documentation to ensure you get that right. Otherwise you could possibly overwrite Windows, or install Linux with no option to select which OS, and only let you use Linux. As a first time dual boot user, do NOT mess with the partition layout the installer suggests.
